Harry Potter and the Charge of the Censoring Brigade

There’s one moment in the Harry Potter series when, amidst the celebrations of the Quidditch World Cup finals, the Dark Mark - a symbol evidencing dark wizard activity - appears in the night sky. I find this chilling because it is the moment when the common man in the street - the mes and yous that is - are forced to realise what they may have wanted to close an eye to: that it is time to take up arms against the evil wizards of the Dark Lord or perish ... or,well, do both.  Of course in Harry Potter there are wizards who know it all and know it better than the rest: the "aurors" whose aim it is to capture dark wizards and witches. It is they who sense the evil wizards and launch their war, much before the smaller-minded lot (our type that is) understand that something is amiss ...

Vigilant and hell-bent on their witch hunts, our local censors seem to be doing just that: taking arms against the many forms of an enemy that aims to offend, undermine or destroy our collective morality.  Like the little fish in the Harry Potter series, I am not yet sure about the exact nature of this enemy and I have no idea when the war really started, but looking back I think the first time it really struck me was when, after one Carnival weekend, some guys were dragged to court for dressing up as Christ and fooling around with statues of Christian saints.

A few years back I would have immediately reacted with scorn and run-off-the-mill anti-Roman Catholic Church conspiracy theory malice to this. Now, I believed, the situation merited the benefit of the doub...

A EuroMaltese Kind of Art

Dear friends, I will be saying this very often, with regards to my drawings or paintings ... My idea of drawing and painting does not mean an exact replica of the subject. I can do that, but I find it extremely boring. What I want is to enjoy myself putting on paper what, in my opinion, represents the nearest that gives one the idea of the subject without exactly copying. Here goes ...

Ventabren

This is one of my favourite paintings. Apart from the painting itself, I simply love this village. Ventabren  is situated some 30 kms to the west of Aix en Provence, in Bouches du Rhone.  I must say that the actual village is larger than it appears in the painting. I drew this painting from memory so, it is not a copy but an impression of how the village looks. I am not interested in producing copies but in having images that reminds one (mostly myself) of the subject.

Above all, this village has a special meaning for me as it is where we got married  Give Heart. Up the street, to your left, look out for the French flag. That is the mayor's office and it is where it happened. The reception then took place at our friends' farmhouse to the right of the picture. These French receptions are never-ending. In fact, I went to sleep at about 4pm, got up at 5.30 pm and found the guests still at it. That was just the beginning, because at 7pm we had to go to the 'official' reception. How can I ever forget Ventabren???  Give Heart Give Heart
